I am busy.

At first I was all excited about the blog and was uploading pictures and posting all the time. I'm still excited about the blog but I am busy. Pottery classes have started up again and are taking up a lot of my time. I have a business trip this week that will take up a lot of my time again.

I have so many pictures of tasty food just waiting on my camera to be let free. Hopefully this weekend. First up I really want to show off my brioche, it turned out awesome!

This and that.

We've been fairly busy on the weekends and for the past few weeks have gotten into kind of messed up grocery shopping planning schedules. It's kind of nice to take a break from intense cooking all the time and get take out a lot.

Tom has also been really great at scrounging around and making things from whatever's in the fridge. Last week we had everything we needed for Carbonera sauce(sp), which was awesome. He also managed fried shrimp for another awesome dinner. I managed to muster up the effort to make homemade pasta to go with our oversupply of pesto. We have quite a supply in the freezer and we need to finish all the pesto by late June when the basil crop starts coming in. Another conquest of last week, was just some plain chocolate pudding from Fanny Farmer's blancmang recipe, which is always a favorite of mine.

All in all for not doing any planning we've been making quite excellent little feasts here and there. Also there was the definite 5 star dinner last night: Cherry Garcia (I finished off the whole pint) for her, and for him Everything But The (only about a half pint). You can't beat a little Ben and Jerry's dinner now and then.

Nothing at all to do with cooking!

Just want to show off my brand new quilt. Tom and I picked out the pattern and fabric together. I cut and pieced the quilt. Tom and I designed the quilting pattern together and my Mom did all the quilting on her long arm along. Quite a team effort! It looks great and I'm really proud of my first quilt!

Chicken and broccoli Stir Fry

We did a nice easy dinner the other night. I cut up the chicken the night before and marinated it in Fannie Farmers ginger soy marinade. Then the next night we when got home late from swimming dinner was ready to be cooked quickly. I cut up an onion in easy large slices, fried that then added the chicken and a little bit of the marinade and cooked until the chicken was mostly done and added in the broccoli, all while some rice was cooking. It turned out great and the actually busy time the night of stir frying was only around 15min.

Cook-Mykal
Time-30 min total, 15 min night before for marinade and chicken, 15 min next night for veggie cutting and cooking

Weekend success

In addition to making some chai I was also able to make up a batch of honey oatmeal bread. It is the perfect snacking bread with a little honey or nuttella as a topping for it once toasted. The chai and toast during the snowstorm, awesome!

Snowstorm

My favorite food for snowstorms/winter is buttered toast with hot chocolate. When we were little we always used to dip the toast in the hot cocoa. I had mostly forgotten about this until last year when I started doing it in the winter again. I love it still.

We've got a fairly nice snow storm going on today so I have big plans for some honey oatmeal bread to be made and then hot cocoa or chai. I can't wait. Although there is a chance I might just nap on the couch all day too... I will update later with photos of the tasty if I work up the effort to get off the couch.

Cake of the Season

Every year Tom makes me a cake for my birthday and every year they are the best cakes ever. This year he didn't have time for the cake making until a week post birthday, but it was worth the wait. He made Glazed Hazelnut Mousse Cake . It was awesome! I love chocolate and hazelnuts and mousse, the three together, perfect! The actual making of it seemed easy for me, but I was also gone for three hours and came home to the mousse cake chilling in the fridge, I think it was actually quite an effort for Tom to put together, but worth it. It's kept very well in the fridge so we've been having slices every night after dinner this week.

Pork Loin in Clay Pot

We did another clay pot recipe this week and again it was excellent. We got a whole pork loin and marinated in a whole bunch of stuff (Tom did this and I'm too lazy to look up what was in the recipe.) Then after baking we had piles of tasty sauce and carmelized onions with roasted pork loin. Mmmmmm.

Time-overnight marinade, 1-2 hours baking

(I'll be adding some pictures later but I have to clear stuff off my harddrive to the external drive to have space to be able to download new pictures.)

Sunchokes

We had the pleasure of eating sunchokes for the first time tonight. Pretty easy to prepare, they just need to be peeled then boiled till tender(about 15 min). We decided to gratin them after that, with a bit of pepper, salt and parmesean. Then out of the oven and they were excellent. They were slightly sweet and very moist similar to a potato but better than potato. If we see these around we'd definitely get them again.
